New Delhi: Getting accustomed to a workout routine may require an immense amount of motivation and determination acquired over some time after a series of procrastination episodes. Obstruction in the schedule due to external factors such as the pandemic or the pollution can come off as quite a disappointment to us. With the rising pollution in the country’s capital, Delhi, as well as other cities, it has become essential to reconsider some things about our workout routine. These changes in the workout routine are to ensure that the body stays in good health. Here are some reasons as to why exercising outdoors in polluted air can be harmful to the body.

Why you must avoid exercising in polluted air

  • Exercising causes an increase in the breathing rate. This leads to excess intake of polluted air in form of breathing.
  • The excessive oxygen requirement by the body causes a reflexive switch from nasal breathing to breathing through the mouth. This gives way to several particles to enter the lungs through the mouth due to the nasal defences of nose hair rendering useless.
  • Inhaling of particulate matter can cause inflammation of lungs and parts of the body.
  • Prolonged exposure to unhealthy air can cause diseases such as asthma, stroke, bronchitis, etc.

Which exercises should you avoid performing in polluted air

Here are some exercises you must avoid carrying out if the air around you is polluted:

  1. Walking: Walking is the most common form of exercise and is prevalent among people of all ages. However, this causes exposure to outdoor toxic air and can be harmful.
  2. Cycling: As popular as walking, cycling is often preferred by young and middle-aged people. This form of exercise causes a simulation of breathing rate. With the exposure to smog and particulate matter, the body can fall into the pit of sickness.
  3. Outdoor yoga: Outdoor yoga exercises, especially exercises that require inhaling and exhaling of air must be avoided as all costs as it can cause a maximum intake of polluted air. One can carry out certain yoga exercises at home.
  4. Sports: Outdoor sports such as cricket, basketball and football must be avoided as it can cause the tiring out of the body which will eventually lead to an increased rate of breathing.
  5. Jogging: Jogging is an advanced form of walking and thereby compels the body to require inhalation of more air. This can harm the body as toxins can enter it through the air.

Bottom line

It is our responsibility as citizens of the country to not carry out activities that promote air pollution. As for our bodies, it is our responsibility to make sure that we take good care of it and do not indulge in activities that can cause the otherwise. Therefore, working out outdoors must be avoided as much as possible.
